Blind

Persona: Lucy

Lucy, 60, white, owns her home and runs her own consulting business. A Blind professional who navigates financial platforms daily using JAWS and a refreshable Braille display.

About This Condition

Blind users navigate digital interfaces without any visual reference, requiring a completely non-visual mental model. Screen readers, keyboard navigation, and Braille displays translate structure into meaning but only when that structure is correctly coded and consistently maintained.

Digital Challenges

Unlabeled buttons, missing alt text, and illogical reading order make it impossible to understand or navigate a page. Many Blind users also prefer reviewing a transcript over listening to a video, as it allows faster navigation and skimming with a screen reader. When structure is visual-only, screen readers announce nothing useful, leaving Blind users unable to complete tasks independently or with confidence.

Assistive Technologies

  • Screen readers
  • Braille displays
  • keyboard navigation

Design Considerations

Use semantic HTML to expose correct roles and structure. Provide descriptive alt text for all images and icons. Ensure reading and focus order reflects visual layout intent and all functionality is fully keyboard operable.
